A fetal echocardiogram is a specialized type of ultrasound that focuses specifically on imaging the developing heart of a fetus (unborn baby) during pregnancy. This diagnostic test provides detailed information about the structure and function of the fetal heart, allowing healthcare providers to assess whether the baby’s heart is developing normally or if there are any potential heart defects or abnormalities.

Fetal echocardiograms are typically recommended in cases where there is an increased risk of congenital heart defects or other cardiac issues. These might include:

  • A family history of heart defects.
  • Previous pregnancies with heart problems.
  • Maternal conditions (e.g., diabetes) that could affect fetal heart development.
  • Certain genetic syndromes associated with heart abnormalities.
  • Abnormal findings on routine prenatal ultrasounds.

Early detection of heart defects through fetal echocardiography allows for appropriate medical planning and intervention, if needed, once the baby is born. It helps healthcare providers offer specialized care and prepare for any necessary treatments or surgeries after birth.
